With
the new year beginning most of you will make a New
Year's resolution. What is a New Year's
resolution? A false promise to oneself, wishful
thinking or one's selfish accomplishment at the
expense of others? A resolution is a commitment
that one makes to a project, or the reforming of a
habit, or often a change in our lives that will be
beneficial or advantageous to us or others.
The
most common New Year's resolutions are: to lose
weight or get into shape, work less, make more
money and even spend more quality time with the
family. If you are like me, the New Year's
resolution lasts about a week maybe a month and
then we forget about the commitment we had
made.
As
you sit down to make some changes this year, keep
this in mind, most of us have what we want and
don't even know it. We take for granted things and
people around us. Let's take a moment to reflect
on the treasures we have in our lives, the things
that give us happiness without even realizing what
they are. What better resolution than to expand on
what we already have and make it bigger and
better, whether it be our relationships, business
or our hearts.
Wishing
you a Healthy and Happy 2010!

Condition Of The Month:
Tension Headache
Tension headache
is a dull pressure pain or discomfort in the head,
scalp, or neck, usually associated with muscle tightness
in these areas. Tension headaches are one of the most
common forms of headache. They can occur at any age, but
are most common in adults and adolescents. Tension
headaches result from the contraction of neck and scalp
muscles. One cause of this muscle contraction is a
response to stress, depression or anxiety. Any activity
that causes the head to be held in one position for a
long time without moving can cause a headache. Such
activities include typing or use of computers, fine work
with the hands, and use of a microscope. Sleeping in a
cold room or sleeping with the neck in an abnormal
position can also trigger this type of headache. Other
causes include spinal misalignment, eye strain, fatigue,
alcohol use, excessive smoking, excessive caffeine use,
sinus infection, nasal congestion, overexertion, colds,
and influenza. Tension headaches are not associated with
structural lesions in the
brain.

NUTRITION:

Nutritional Value of
Lentils
Lentils are the legumes that grow in
pods, on a bushy annual plant called Lens ensculenta.
They are scientifically called Lens culinaris and are
believed to have originated from Central Asia, during
the prehistoric times. Since then, lentils have been
grown throughout the world and are popularly known for
their rich nutritious content. Lentils are available in
many varieties and different colors, like black, green,
orange, brown, red, and yellow. They abound in fiber
content, which helps in reducing the cholesterol as well
as blood sugar levels. They also prove to be a rich
source of consistent energy to the body. They contain
several vitamins, minerals and protein as well, which
make them highly beneficial for
health.
-
Lentils are not new. They
have been found in archaeological sights dating to
prehistory.
-
Like all legumes, lentils
are rich in protein, starch, and an excellent source
of vitamins. The protein doesn't contain all the
essential amino acids. Combining lentils with cereals,
like rice or bread, provides the body with the
complete protein.
-
Their abundant supply of
B vitamins, especially niacin, makes lentils
especially beneficial for reducing cholesterol,
excessive stress, and promoting general well-being of
the nervous system.
-
Lentils also carry
significant amounts of iron, zinc, and calcium. Their
content of phytic acid makes it more difficult for the
body to absorb these minerals. Eating a good source of
vitamin C with the lentils increases the iron
absorption.
-
Lentils are high in the
group of organic compounds known as purins, which can
cause uric acid salts to be deposited in the joints;
they are often avoided by those with conditions
involving inflammation of the joints.
-
Lentils are usually red,
yellow, green, or brown, and there is little
nutritional difference. Their high fiber content
offers a degree of protection against bowel
cancer.

Steps for Achieving your New Year
Resolution
1. Step 1
Be realistic by setting achievable goals.
Winning the lottery, for example, is out of your
grasp.
2. Step 2
Describe your resolutions in specific
terms. Instead of "I don't want to be lazy," opt for "I
want to exercise regularly" or "I will cut down on my
television watching."
3. Step 3
Break down large goals into smaller ones.
For instance, commit to losing weight by resolving to
join a gym and improve your eating
habits.
4. Step 4
Find alternatives to a behavior that you
want to change, and make this part of your resolution
plan. So you want to quit smoking but you smoked to
relax yourself? What other forms of relaxation are
available to you?
5. Step 5
Above all, aim for things that are truly important to
you, not what you think you ought to do or what others
expect of
you. |

pulled the muscles in my shoulder while cycling. For
years, I have been a "typical" guy and never went to the
doctor unless I couldn't stand it any longer. A friend
raved about Dr. Lechner and urged me to go see him. As
usual, I waited and procrastinated but eventually I
found myself in his waiting room for my first ever

out, literally! Now I am a raving
